Cheongju, located at the central part of the Korean peninsular, is a good city in which to live and has great potential for future development. Cheongju is a thousand-year-old city where the ancient culture of Korea¡¯s ¡®Three Kingdoms¡¯ had united and developed. It is the birthplace of Jikji, the world¡¯s oldest movable metal-type printed book.

Cheongju is an inland city located 128 km south east of Seoul, in the middle of Korean Peninsular. Cheongju is known as an historic city of culture and education. The Mushim Stream surrounds the city center and flows south to north. Low mountains and fields spread the city. It has a total area of 153.31§´, corresponding to 2.07% of the total territory of the North Chungcheong Province.

The climate of Cheongju is continental, hot and humid in summer and cold and dry in winter. The average annual temperature is 11.6¡É and the average annual precipitation is 1,200mm with half of this falling in between July to September. The dry and rainy seasons are distinctively marked and there have been few natural disasters such as floods or typhoons in Cheongju. With water from Daechong Lake and inexpensive land surrounding the city, Cheongju has the optimum conditions for high-tech industries.

As all of the main Korean transportation thoroughfares, including the Gyeongbu Expressway, the Jungbu Expressway, and the Gyeongbu express railroad lines serve Cheongju, citizens of Cheongju can travel round trip to anywhere in Korean within a day. Internationally, Cheongju is open to the world via its international airport.

With Cheongju International Airport, Ochang Scientific and Industrial Park, and Osong Bio-Health Science Techno-polis in the area, Cheongju is becoming recognized as the center of the most advance technology in the 21st century. It is also acknowledged as a good place to do business since the city focuses on helping companies to strengthen their export competiveness and to stabilize their management systems by providing administrative and financial support. As of December, 2005, the number of companies registered in Cheongju was 39,676 and the employees numbered 177,553. Globally recognized enterprises like Hynix Semiconductor, LS Industrial Systems, LG Chemical, and Hankook Chinaware are the main contributors to Cheongju¡¯s economic growth. In 2006 alone, total trade amount in Cheongju recorded US$7,037 Million with US$4,530 Million which largely accounts for semiconductor in terms of items.

Surrounded by scenic sights of the nature with clean environment, cultural inheritances rich with historical and traditional background such as Sangdang Mountain Fortress, Heungdeok Temple Site (Early Printing Museum) and Buddhist Iron Flagpole are well maintained. Cheongju is also endowed with a number of scenic sites frequented by tourists year round; including Songni Mountain National Park, Okhwa 9 Famous Spots, Chojeong Mineral Water Spring, Hwayang-dong Canyon, Ssang-gok Canyon, etc.
