| Goesan County is located at the geographic center of South Korea and bordering with 8 cities and counties. As of now, the county takes up 11.3% of the total land surface area of the North Chungcheong province with an area of 842§´. Though mountains cover most of the area, the agriculture is still the main business. As of September, 2007, the population of Goesan is about 37,112 and the number of household is about 16,273. It is composed of 1 town and 10 subcounties. |

Goesan is in the most inland area of southern Korea, its climate is classified as southern inland climate, and since it consists of more mountainous zones than the other areas nearby, it has extremity of temperature and relatively more topographical rainfall. Annual average precipitation amounts to 1,349mm. The most precipitation is shown in the summer, when the northern Pacific Ocean appears, while the lowest precipitation appears in winter.
Goesan is connected to large cities by the railway and expressways. Especially, transportation became very convenient with the opening of Jungbu Inland Expressway. Travel by expressways takes about 1 hour from Seoul to the county. With these convenient transportation means, the county has many advantageous conditions as a center of export and has great potential for development.
Goesan is a popular tourist attraction as a tourist resort with scenic mountains like Mt. Wolak, Mt. Sokri and Mt. Gunja, and the valleys in Hwayang and Seonyu Gugok. Also, Goesan is famous for environmentally friendly agricultural products such as Red Peppers, Large-kernel Corn, and Pickled Cabbage. Especially, Goesan pepper, grown under the ideal conditions for cultivating peppers, has the feature of best taste and the flavor in the nation.
About sixty percent of Goesan terrain is mountainous so the land fits for cultivating dry crops. Along with the tobacco, the pepper is one of major produces in the area. Although the pepper is grown generally all in the country, only Goesan has the ideal conditions for cultivating peppers that has the best taste and the flavor in the nation. |
