Okcheon is neighboring with Yeongdong to the south and east, Boeun to the north, Sangju in the North Gyeongsang Province with the Sobaek Mountain Range to the east, Daejeon and Geumsan to the west. It has the land area equal to 537.1 square kilometers, which comprises the 7.2% of the North Chungcheong Province. In the total area, the forest land constitutes 65.3% or, 357.04km2, the farmland 107.66km2, and others 79.2 km2. About 86.5% of Okcheon is development restriction zone and Special Measures Zone of Water Quality Preservation. As of December, 2005, it has the population of 56,134 with 20,890 households and is divided into 1 town and 8 subcounties.
The upper stream of Geumgang (River), which runs from the two origins of Mt. Deokyu running between Muju and Yeongdong in Chungbuk and Mt. Sokri in Boeun, runs from the north to the south. As for transportation, the Gyeongbu railroad, express and national highway run from Gunbuk County within the jurisdiction to Okcheon, Dongi, and Iwon County, and also run between Okcheon and Boeun, Okcheon and Geumsan, and Cheongseong and Yeongdong.
Okcheon is the region of culture with both great natural beauty and history from time immemorial, which has many cultural heritages, including Yongamsassang Three-storied Stone Pagoda. Especially, Jangyongsan recreational forest shows the clear and clean waters.
